Coming off a recent tour of his own one-man show ICONS—a history of the lesbian and gay community that includes AIDS—Jade Esteban Estrada has long reached out to the HIV/AIDS community through his music and spirit. He is a triple-threat entertainer: singer, dancer, composer, comic, choreographer. Okay, that’s more than “triple,” but you get the point. His latest CD, Angel, is heavensent: Latin pop propelled by a rich and soulful voice. Check out Jade’s music on the FX series The Shield , as well as on the Human Rights Campaign's CD compilation, Being Out Rocks along with Cyndi Lauper, k.d. lang, and Sarah McLachlan (Jade is a spokesperson for the HRC).You can read more about Jade in Ruby Comer’s interview in the September 2003 issue by clicking here. AIDS Walk 2005 in New York City
The rain stayed away (for the most part) but the crowds came out to support the 20th annual AIDS Walk New York and change the course of the epidemic. 45,000 participants came out and over $5.8 million was raised on Sunday, May 15, making the Walk the largest and most successful ever held. The not-for-profit community-based organization, GMHC, as well as other local organizations providing HIV/AIDS services benefited from the hard work and generosity of volunteers, Walkers, and donors. Celebrities such as Norah Jones, Maureen McGovern, Hal Sparks, Richard Thomas, and Judith Light, among others, were on hand to help celebrate and inspire.
A&U’s Managing Editor Chael Needle and Art Director Timothy J. Haines walked as part of the William and Mary Alumni Society team and raised $565 to bring the team total to $10, 803 (and counting).
